Thomas Javier Castillo
Night and Steeple
Artist Statement: An experiment in creating a film from variations on a single shot, taken during my time in an Evanston apartment. The steeple of the film became something of a totem, a subject of small-scale fascination and drama and myth. It was a reminder of where I was and of where I was not. This project is a memory of that time and place. The words were collected, erasure-style, from a poem written by a companion who visited and too fell under the spell of the steeple.
Thomas Javier Castillo is a filmmaker and Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre and Film at Bowling Green State University. His films explore memory, history, geography and identity and are heavily informed by Mexican-American culture and the science fiction genre.
